Just Athens: 5-Day Athens Tour with Delphi & Cape Sounion

Athens, Ancient and Contemporary
Athens brings together ancient history, lively neighbourhoods and everyday Greek life in a way few cities can. This five-day Athens tour package introduces you to the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum, while leaving time to wander through the historic centre, enjoy Greek cuisine and discover the city’s modern side.
Stay in Historic Plaka
Stay in the Plaka area or nearby, close to the Acropolis and some of the most atmospheric streets of old Athens. Traditional houses, small squares, cafés and narrow lanes create a welcoming setting from which to explore the city at your own pace.
Five Days, Beyond Athens
Your journey also takes you beyond the Greek capital. Travel to Delphi, one of the great archaeological sites of ancient Greece, and discover its sanctuary and museum. On another day, follow the Attica Riviera to Cape Sounion, where the Temple of Poseidon overlooks the Aegean Sea.
Together, Athens, Delphi and Cape Sounion offer a compact journey through Greek history, mythology, culture and landscape, with plenty of time to enjoy Athens along the way.

Day 1: Welcome to Athens
Today you arrive in Athens. Upon arrival at Athens International Airport, you will be transferred to your hotel in Athens. Check in at your hotel in the Plaka area or nearby, close to the Acropolis of Athens ↗. The afternoon is at leisure, giving you time to settle in and begin exploring at your own pace.
Wander through the historic streets, browse the shops around Syntagma Square or Plaka, and enjoy your first taste of the city. You may wish to try classic Greek dishes such as moussaka, pastitsio, souvlaki and baklava, perhaps with a glass of retsina.
After your first impressions of Athens, return to your hotel for your overnight.
Day 2: Athens
After breakfast, begin your four-hour cultural sightseeing tour of Athens. Visit the Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum and the surrounding area. From the Acropolis hill, enjoy sweeping views across Athens, including landmarks such as the Ancient Agora, the Observatory, the Pnyx, Philopappos Hill and Areopagus (Mars Hill). You will also admire the Theatre of Dionysus and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.
After the tour, the rest of the day is at leisure. If you wish, continue exploring independently with a visit to the Museum of Cycladic Art, the National Archaeological Museum or the Benaki Museum.
In the evening, you may choose a theatre performance, musical, ballet or concert. The Athens Concert Hall or the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center are among the city’s major cultural venues. At the end of the evening, return to your hotel for your second overnight. (B)
Day 3: Athens – Delphi – Athens
In the morning, depart by coach for your full-day excursion to Delphi, the ancient omphalos, or “navel of the world”. The ancient Greeks regarded Delphi as the centre of the world.
UNESCO World Heritage Site of Delphi ↗
The sanctuary of Delphi was dedicated to the god Apollo and set within a spectacular landscape. For centuries, it was an important cultural and religious centre and a symbol of unity for the Hellenic world. People travelled here to consult the oracle of Apollo through his priestess, the Pythia.
Visit the archaeological site and the Delphi Archaeological Museum, with its remarkable collection of ancient finds. Among the highlights is the bronze Charioteer of Delphi.
After visiting the site, return by coach to Athens, passing by Arachova, the well-known village and winter resort. (B, L)
Day 4: Athens – Attica Riviera – Cape Sounion
Your morning is at leisure, with time to explore Plaka and old Athens. Stroll along its narrow streets, admire the traditional architecture, small courtyards and gardens, and perhaps walk higher towards the Acropolis for panoramic views over the city.
In the afternoon, depart on a four-hour excursion to Cape Sounion. Travel by coach along the Attica Riviera to visit the Temple of Poseidon, overlooking the Aegean Sea.
According to Greek mythology, Cape Sounion is associated with King Aegeus and the return of his son Theseus from Crete.
Return to Athens for your final overnight at the hotel. (B)
Day 5: Farewell Athens
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel in Athens before collecting your belongings and checking out.
If your departure schedule leaves some free time, you may wish to visit the Byzantine and Christian Museum or explore one of the art galleries in central Athens. At the appropriate time, you will be transferred from your hotel to Athens International Airport for your departure flight. (B)
We hope your time in Athens has given you memorable impressions of the city and its surroundings, and we look forward to welcoming you back to Greece on another journey planned by the Vikings Navita team.
